What you would like and what you will get are different, unfortunately! The only extent to which "nighttime" has been made "official" is in the soli-lunar calendar, as used today by Jews.. It represents months based on the moon's phases, and each year being a whole number of months. This leads to different lengths of years - some a whole "month" longer than others. Every 19 years is almost (but not QUITE) a whole number of lunar months, so our calendar and the Hebrew calendar are re-aligned after 19 years (called a "Metonic cycle" after the ancient metiorologist, Meton). Our own calendar has different length years -- one extra day nearly every fourth year -- but there is no attempt to align the clock with daylight -- it would be very complex, changing by latitude and at different times through the year. Television listings have decided that "evening" starts at 6:00pm in North America (TV Guide) but at 7:00pm in Britain (Radio Times, TV Times, etc). "Lighting up time" -- the "official" definition of nighttime, one might suppose -- changes by location and date, and are published in tables of "Ephemera" (Ancient Greek for "vanishing things")..

I've always thought it was 6:00pm. a nice mid point
between noon and midnight. -- If you think evening is
synonymous with nighttime, I'd go with 6:00pm.
That's when the evening news begins.
Some cultures consider nighttime to be sundown.
It's too confusing for me. I grew up near Boston where
the consensus seems to agree on 6pm.

According to a free downloadable dictionary called "TheSage", nighttime is the time after sunset and before sunrise while it is dark outside.
Evening, however, begins at 5pm in the USA.
