This is for a paper I'm writing, about 12 people who live/work on a spaceship. Random, I know, but it's for a creative writing class and this paper is going to kick butt. What are 12 jobs or positions these people could have on a spaceship? So far I have captain, pilot, co-pilot, navigator/map maker, 2 mechanics, a cook, a fighter/weapons dude-- what else? get creative. put your star trek Firefly thinking caps on!

I'm going to include what you have and add 4 more.

1. captain, what's ship without captain?

2. pilot, what's ship without pilot?

3. co-pilot, so he/she can take over pilot's

4. navigator, so ship can navigate

5. mechanic, so he/she can maintain the ship

6. mechanic 2, in case mechanic is on break

7. cook, some people have to cook

8. weapon expert aka dude who do weapons, person who's expert on weapon

9. doctor/nurse, better have medical expert in case of radiation, head injury, etc as accident can happen

10. scientist, in case ship pick up some weird stuffs from random planet or from floating around

11. scientist 2, having two heads is better than one head

12. janitor, someone have to clean and that's janitor.

Does that help?

1. Captain - leads crew, makes main decisions

2. Flight plan specialist - has to understand the Galaxy so they can help the captain navigate issues such as black holes, milky ways, solar rains....

3. Propulsion specialist - manages the propulsion of the ship - not just fuel, but the various mechanisms that propel the ship into space, or let it cruise.... This guy has a huge ego.

4. + 5. You need at least 2 guys who everyone can trust to protect these people. They are called "The Shields". They blend in, but they are like the knights of the Round Table, fiercely loyal, will fight to the death. They also do background checks, do profiling on all ship members and people coming and going. They just hang out with each other and the captain, so there needs to be two. They also manage other lower-level shields. Very high honor job.

6. You need a special scientist - some type of "ologist" who is responsible for researching the particles in the galaxy. Their job is part Abby in NCIS, and part futuristic, because they will be determining if particles, gasses, matter... are known or unknown. If it is unknown, they work feverishly to understand it's compounds and it's negative/positive qualities.

7. This person, has at least one assistant, who helps examine all the matter, gasses, debris, and determines their usefulness. Like maybe something can be food or provide or is a great element for weapons, or it will make your hair shiny...

8. You have to have a translator. Someone who can talk to other intelligent life or try to at least. Does lots of research. Very studious.

9. There has to be someone on the bridge, like a air traffic controller. This person could work with the other scientist to identify information, or look into past time, keep eyes open for things flying around or enemies. Always in disagreement with flight plan specialist.

10. You need a manager on deck. Someone who takes care of all the emails, reports, the log, pictures, makes sure the captain is happy...

11. You need a ship manager who oversees all the things people need (food, laundry, drugs, gifts, cleaning, therapy, education, dating services...)

12, You need a genius, who can do everything and anything, who is a crazy and fun character, who is a hero, but never takes the credit, and has lots of quirks.

Sounds like the crew in Andre Norton's Solar Quest novels.

I can't remember exact jobs, but that was split up with four people involved with flight deck-type jobs, four people with engineering-type jobs, four people with people-type jobs. No weapons, but they did have trading specialists.

It's also going to depend what your spaceship is for. Military? Trade? Exploration? Passenger transport?

Yes. I believe in what I saw. Now all the whack jobs can jump in and make trailer park comments, etc. I saw what I saw and I believe it. There is nothing you can say that will change my mind. I do not live in a trailer, I have a high IQ, I have a college degree and I work in a highly regarded profession.
