i love art and am a high school student

i am confident that i could get into the chicago art institute school, aside from how pricey it is :(

i would love art in studio, but u cant really get many good jobs with that. i figure art history is good since they say the first year you do studio art...

the problem is, what can you do with that?

its a dream to work in the art museum in chicago for me, like even as a tour guide would be so cool.

i hear u should get a graduate degree off of a bachelors art history to make yourself more valuable since a BA in art history is supposedly pointless

i dont want to be a teacher because i hate the idea of it.

but i figure a curator or museum tour guide would be fun... :D

I am an art curator, and I love it!

You say you want to work in the museums as a tour guide, the only problem with that is that most of the time it's volunteer work, i.e you don't get paid. But the good news with that is it's easier to get into then you think! I started tour guides at my local gallery when i was 16, and when I went to uni in London when I was 18 I started at the famous galleries there. If you do this now, it will be easier to get into the curating world.

Curating is fun, but one reason it is so hard to get into is because people think of it as the only job from a degree in art history, but there is also working in auction houses, working in conservation, journalism, as an archivist, or, if you know your stuff, as an art dealer. Being an art dealer in a gallery, or just in your own time, will require you t have a bit of money to start with but it is essentially the risky business of buying and selling art. I started at 18, and it funded my way through uni, so it does work! Just keep up to date with the art crowd in your area.

Hope this helps.

The major you are choosing is beautiful. When people sometimes hear the word "Arts Major", they assume that this person's degree is pointless, but they are wrong. Look around, the whole world is full of art. This doesn't necessarily mean that the only job you can get is an art teacher or art history teacher. Your arts degree will take you places you never thought of.

Take a look at this. Painting, printmaking, weaving, ceramics, photography, sculpture, and drawing are all examples of fine arts. Of all arts areas, fine arts can be the most isolating. Aspiring artists would do well to connect with other artists by sharing studio space or joining an arts group. Regardless of how you do it, finding a way to connect with others means that you are not working in a vacuum. This strategy will likely benefit both your emotional well-being and your art. Try to find opportunities to exhibit your work. Look for calls for submissions in publications, journals, and newsletters. Also, look for receptive restaurant owners, community arts centers, libraries, banks, and other public spaces to show your work. If they like your work, you are most likely to find a job in all of those places listed up there.

Don't give up on your dream, trust me you don't want to end up in a major you hate because THIS is what you are going to be doing for the rest of your life. Choose wisely..
